BPH INFO & TREATMENT OPTIONS

BPH

In most men, the prostate grows throughout adulthood. The result is an enlarged prostate, which is also known by the medical name benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The prostate is a gland located just below the bladder, its main function is to produce fluid for semen. The prostate also surrounds the urethra, which is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the penis. As the gland grows, it may eventually put pressure on the urethra, like a clamp on a garden hose. As pressure builds and the “clamp” tightens, the result can be bothersome urinary symptoms. BPH is not a form of prostate cancer and does not lead to prostate cancer.

Although BPH is not life-threatening, it may require treatment to relieve its symptoms and prevent potential long-term complications.

OUR VISION

Our mission at Imperial is to provide innovative, non-invasive opportunities to Urologists that will allow them to provide their patients the chance to avoid having to settle for medication or surgery. We feel that if we expand the capabilities of the physicians, it will allow them to partner with their patient to set the correct expectations and reach the intended goal while in an office environment in under an hour.

It is a sad fact but, many patients are burdened the expense of medications that are either failing or causing side effects that are disrupting other aspects of their health.

At Imperial, we aim to help all of the parties involved in your healthcare. It begins with offering the physician a great technology that can replace the immediate need for medication or surgery. The next step is to make sure that we seamlessly implement this technology in a way that not only enhances the quality of care provided but, does not interrupt the flow of their staff and practice. Lastly, and most importantly, we are here to make sure that the patients are happy and healthy after working with one of our physicians.

Why our patients love TUMT

Transurethral microwave thermotherapy (TUMT) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous condition in which the prostate gland enlarges and causes urinary symptoms. TUMT offers several benefits as a treatment option for BPH:

  • Minimally Invasive: TUMT is a minimally invasive procedure, meaning it doesn't require surgical incisions. Instead, it's performed through the urethra, reducing the risk of complications and allowing for a shorter recovery period compared to traditional surgical options.

  • Outpatient Procedure: TUMT is typically performed on an outpatient basis, which means you can often go home the same day. This reduces the inconvenience and cost associated with inpatient hospital stays.

  • Local Anesthesia: TUMT is usually performed under local anesthesia, which further minimizes the risks associated with general anesthesia and shortens the recovery time.

  • Improved Urinary Symptoms: TUMT is effective in relieving urinary symptoms associated with BPH, such as urinary frequency, urgency, weak stream, and incomplete emptying. It helps by shrinking or removing excess prostate tissue that obstructs urine flow.

  • Rapid Symptom Relief: Many patients experience an improvement in their urinary symptoms relatively quickly after the TUMT procedure, often within a few weeks to a few months.

  • Preserves Sexual Function: TUMT generally has a lower risk of causing sexual dysfunction compared to some other BPH treatments, such as surgical procedures like transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).

  • Minimal Side Effects: TUMT is associated with fewer side effects and complications compared to some other treatments, particularly surgical options.

  • No Need for Catheterization: In many cases, TUMT does not require the use of a catheter after the procedure, as opposed to some surgical methods that may involve catheterization.

  • Suitable for Certain Patients: TUMT may be a suitable option for individuals with smaller to moderate-sized prostates and those who are not good candidates for surgery due to health concerns or personal preferences.

It's important to note that the effectiveness and appropriateness of TUMT as a treatment for BPH may vary from one individual to another. Patients should discuss their specific condition, medical history, and treatment options with a urologist to determine the most suitable approach for their case.
